PSHE at Kingsley

Personal, Social, Health and Economic Education (PSHE) at Kingsley

Our vision (Intent)

At Kingsley Community Primary and Nursery School, PSHE plays a vital role in preparing children to lead happy, healthy, safe and fulfilling lives. It supports our school motto, ‘Inspiring Positive Futures’, by helping every child develop the knowledge, confidence and values they need to flourish- both at school and in the wider world.

Positive relationships are at the heart of life at Kingsley. Through PSHE, children learn to understand themselves and others, manage their emotions, develop resilience and make informed, responsible choices. They are encouraged to appreciate difference, challenge prejudice and treat everyone with kindness, dignity and respect.

Our shared expectations- Ready, Safe and Respectful - are woven throughout PSHE and the wider life of our school. Alongside British Values and our No Outsiders approach, they help children understand what it means to belong to an inclusive community in which everyone is welcomed, valued and able to be themselves.

We aim for all pupils to:

  • develop confidence, resilience and positive self-esteem;

  • recognise, understand and manage their emotions;

  • build healthy relationships based on kindness, trust, respect and equality;

  • make informed choices about their health, wellbeing and safety;

  • know how and when to seek help for themselves or someone else;

  • understand how to stay safe both offline and online;

  • value diversity and understand that everyone belongs;

  • listen respectfully and appreciate that others may hold different views;

  • understand their rights, responsibilities and role within a community; and

  • develop the skills and attitudes needed to inspire a positive future for themselves and others.

How PSHE is taught (Implementation)

We use the Coram Life Education SCARF curriculum to provide a carefully sequenced and progressive programme of learning from the Early Years to Year 6. SCARF stands for Safety, Caring, Achievement, Resilience and Friendship - values which closely reflect our own ethos at Kingsley.

PSHE lessons provide children with a safe and supportive space in which to explore important topics, ask questions and share their thoughts, feelings and opinions. Discussion is a particularly important part of our approach. Children learn to listen carefully, express their ideas respectfully and understand that people may have different experiences and viewpoints.

Pupils in Pine, Maple, Chestnut and Oak use PSHE journals to record and reflect upon their thoughts, feelings, knowledge and developing understanding. These journals recognise that PSHE is personal and reflective; they are not about producing identical pieces of written work, but about helping children make meaningful connections with their learning.

PSHE is not limited to a single lesson. Our whole-school and class assemblies are a key part of our provision, giving children regular opportunities to explore relationships, wellbeing, safety, diversity, British Values and issues within the wider world.

The principles of Ready, Safe and Respectful, British Values and No Outsiders are reinforced across the curriculum, through our behaviour and relationships approach and in everyday interactions throughout school.

Learning is also enriched through stories, themed events, visitors, charitable activities, pupil leadership and opportunities to contribute to school and community life. Teaching is adapted sensitively so that all children, including those with SEND, can participate meaningfully and feel safe, supported and included.

Relationships and Health Education

Relationships and Health Education is an important part of our PSHE curriculum. Through carefully planned, age-appropriate learning, children develop an understanding of healthy relationships, different families, friendship, personal boundaries, physical and emotional wellbeing and how to ask for help.

Children learn that relationships should be based on kindness, trust, respect and equality. They are taught how to recognise when something does not feel right, how to keep themselves safe—including online—and which trusted adults they can speak to if they are worried.

Learning about physical and emotional health helps pupils understand how their bodies and feelings may change as they grow. Lessons encourage children to look after their wellbeing, develop healthy habits and speak openly and appropriately about their questions or concerns.

Teaching is inclusive, sensitive and adapted to reflect the age and needs of our pupils. Through SCARF and our No Outsiders approach, children learn that families and relationships can look different, but that everyone deserves to feel safe, respected and included.

We value our partnership with parents and carers and share further information about this aspect of the curriculum through our Relationships and Sex Education Policy.

The difference our curriculum makes (Impact)

Through PSHE, our pupils develop the confidence to express themselves, seek help and make positive choices. They learn how to build and maintain healthy relationships, care for their physical and emotional wellbeing and respond safely to situations they may encounter.

Children develop respect for different identities, families, cultures, beliefs and ways of life. They understand that difference is a positive part of our school, our community and modern Britain - and that there are no outsiders at Kingsley.

By the time they leave us, we want our pupils to be compassionate, resilient and responsible young people who are ready for the next stage of their education. They will understand themselves and others, know how to keep themselves safe and be prepared to contribute positively to an ever-changing world.

This is how PSHE helps us to fulfil our shared ambition of Inspiring Positive Futures.
