Sycamore 2018 - 2019

Mrs Holmes

Having spent my PGCE year training here at Kingsley, I am delighted to be back teaching Sycamore class. I was originally a research scientist (I have a PhD!) but I made the decision to switch careers and it has been the best choice I could have made. Away from school I like nothing better than being in the outdoors with my family. I can often be found up a mountain, in a boat, on a climbing wall or standing on a muddy riverbank cheering my daughter on in her attempts to realise her dream of making it onto the Team GB canoe slalom sqaud (she's currently 8 so we have a way to go).

Welcome to Sycamore Class!

Our Summer term is going to be fun filled and action packed. We are going to be studying some beautiful books in our Literacy lessons starting with 'When the Forest Meets the Sea.' I cannot wait to see the wonderful writing that they produce next! In Maths we will be looking at decimals, measurement, time and data handling as well as having a lot of fun 'playing' with numbers. Time and money are elements you can really help with at home by allowing your child to pay for items and calculate change, and by encouraging them to use both analogue and digital clocks to work out the time and how many hours/minutes to or since an event. If you want any advice or information on what they need to learn then please just ask! Our topic is one I am particularly excited about: The Ancient Greeks. We will be learning about some famous Greeks, and investigating their legacy, as well as learning about the Greek Gods and the origins of the Olympic games. We will be continuing with our work on 'No Outsiders' and I am really impressed with the quality of discussion this is inspiring in the classroom. I also have a few suprises up my sleeves to ensure that this is our best term yet!

Spellings will continue to be set on a Tuesday and there will be a test the following Monday. Weekly times table tests have been replaced with regular TT rockstar activities. Please ensure that your child accesses TT Rockstars at home as this will greatly aid their recall of times table facts. There will be maths homework sent home on Fridays - this could be an activity in their journal, mymaths or mental maths activities. Their will also be activities linked to their guided reading sessions in class. The homework menu for this term is in your child's journal, but can also be found below. Main course are expected to be completed but puddings are optional. However, if all homeworks are completed your child will be able to attend one of our fabulous reward afternoons so it is definitely well worth the effort!

We will be doing PE on Wednesdays and Fridays so please ensure that PE kit is in school on these days. We also run the daily mile so they will need a pair of trainers in school each day. Since we plan to make good use of our outdoor learning environment they will also require a pair of wellies. As the summer approaches your child will also need suncream and a hat in school.

Please feel free to come and see me at the end of the day, for any reason, or make an appointment with the school office if you require a longer chat. Your child's wellbeing and happiness is of the utmost importance to me!

I'm looking forward to another fabulous term and seeing what amazing things we can achieve.
